Before we get caught up in the flesh of powertrains for the
  • Ranger Raptor, it’s good to have a quick look at the history behind this vehicle.

The Ranger Raptor is based on the T6 platform and uses a modified chassis compared to the regular Ford Ranger. The chassis includes coil springs with Fox Racing’s bespoke suspension instead of leaf springs, along with disc brakes at the rear and Watt joints.

Much of the learning from the Ranger Raptor is transferred to the modified T6 platform that serves Ford Ranger in the US. The Ranger currently sold in the US market is equipped with a 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder petrol EcoBoost engine and a leaf-spring suspension arrangement.

In 2018, Ford first registered a design patent for the American market Ranger Raptor. We know it’s for the US because it features a rear sliding window (a feature we don’t get here) and includes the equivalent of an American patent registration number.

In 2018, I also had the opportunity to interview Trevor Worthington, who was then Ford’s vice president of product development for Asia Pacific and is now vice president of global product development operations and Ford’s vehicle program.

It appears that potential buyers disagreed with Worthington, with the article drawing over 150 comments, further boosted by comments elsewhere on the internet in favor of the larger engine.

The current 2.0-liter diesel unit in the Ranger Raptor weighs 2342kg making it capable of reaching 100 km / h sprints in about 10.5 seconds, mainly due to the extra weight it carries over the regular Ranger Wildtrak 2278kg.

So that leads us to the three engines that will be available for the Ranger Raptor as part of the 2022 model range.

The Australian and Asian markets will receive the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine producing 157kW of power and 500Nm of torque. It will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and will send torque to the rear wheels, with four-wheel drive selectable for unsealed surfaces.
The Australian and Asian markets will also receive the option of a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine producing 190kW of power and 600Nm of torque. This engine is currently used on the F-150 and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It will feature permanent all-wheel drive (similar to the Volkswagen Amarok) with selectable low-range mode.

After years of the Ford Ranger Raptor being forbidden fruit, it’s all confirmed that the next generation of trucks will hit our shores. We now have definitive evidence that a baby Raptor is coming to the US for the first time. Better yet, we know what engine the truck will have, and CarExpert has given us some renderings they say what the truck will look like. Here’s everything we know about the US-bound Ford Ranger Raptor 2022.

First, this is how we know this product is coming to the US. In 2018, Ford submitted trademarks and naming drawings for the Ranger Raptor domestic market, but the trucks never made it here. In overseas markets like Australia, the Ranger Raptor has a 210 hp four-cylinder diesel engine, at least by American standards. It would never fly on the ground of the 450 hp F-150 Raptors, but Ford lacked the suitably powerful engine developed for the T6 platform.

But the Ranger-based Ford Bronco is coming soon, and will have an optional 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost engine with 325 hp, dubbed the Nano. Ford is likely waiting for the Nano V6 to be integrated into the Bronco platform, so bringing it to the next-generation Ranger Raptor will be even easier. A screenshot of the supposed Ford computer, below, also shows information for a left-drive Ranger of 2021 or later that will get a 2.7 liter Nano V6 and all-wheel drive.

Therefore, we need to consider the following points. This is the third powertrain that is thought to be in the next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor. A recent report implies that the Ford Ranger Raptor 2022 will be a V6 diesel, while others claim the 400 horsepower 3.0L EcoBoost V6 will share with the so-called Bronco Raptor (or whatever they eventually call range-topping off. Highway SUV). Make this what you want.

The renderings the Australian outlet gave us show a more modern look to the truck, but with the traditional aggressive design and wide fenders, we expect from a Raptor product. According to their secret sources who have seen the final product, this is what the Ford Ranger Raptor 2022 looks like. Supposedly, the Ranger Raptor will also use the luxurious Fox Live Valve damper from the larger F-150 Raptor.

Overall, this is encouraging news for off-road enthusiasts in the U.S. By 2022, we will likely have no shortage of machines to take anywhere from Ford Performance anytime soon, in all shapes and sizes.
