2022 Volvo XC90 Redesign– The next-generation XC90 will be the first car to be equipped with the necessary Luminar lidar hardware, but the software to build an autonomous car won’t be ready until later.

Volvo an automaker known for its commitment to safety continues its journey into the world of autonomous vehicles. Volvo announced that the second generation of its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2) modular vehicle will be shipped with self-driving hardware, including Luminar partner lidar.

The software required to achieve this feat will be delivered at a later time via an over-the-air (OTA) update. In other words, your XC90 2022 won’t be able to drive alone by 2022. If that sounds familiar, it’s the same game plan Tesla used: build a car with the necessary hardware and add the software at a later time when it’s ready.

One piece of hardware that makes this possible is the lidar system from Luminar. But instead of the weird hockey puck-shaped device we are used to seeing in test vehicles, the lidar element would be a bump that is mostly hidden just above the windshield. Lidar uses a laser to measure distances and share that information with the vehicle as a three-dimensional map.

Autonomous propulsion has the potential to become one of the most life-saving technologies in history, if introduced in a responsible and safe manner.

The lidar on this new car likely won’t be waiting for the software to be used. The company is also considering making lidar standards in all vehicles. So even if drivers decide not to take part in this feature, they may benefit from better lane maintenance and adaptive cruise control.

2022 Volvo XC90 Electric

Volvo will launch an electric version of the next-generation XC90, due sometime in 2022.

The third-generation XC90 will be the first model based on the updated SPA architecture to support all next-generation versions of Volvo’s 60 and 90 series models.

Confirming the news, Volvo boss Håkan Samuelsson also revealed that an expansion of the smaller 40-series model will also take place beyond the current only XC40.

Whether it will be a more direct replacement for the recently discontinued V40 family hatchback is not yet known, but Samuelsson said the company “recognizes the need for other small and premium cars” with a particular focus on Europe, and that there are “plans to do so. more family model ”.

The Series 40 will initially expand with the XC40 Electric Recharge later this year, and at least one new body style will follow suit, apart from anything that is given the XC40 badge.

Volvo’s strategy for electric cars is to offer electric versions of existing models, not custom builds – a role that is believed to have been covered by the new Polestar electric performance car brand.

Apart from being offered as an EV, the next XC90 will continue to be offered as a plug-in hybrid and possibly mild-hybrid petrol. However, there will be no diesel option, as Volvo plans to not offer diesel when it replaces and extends its range from now on.

Samuelsson confirmed that future SPA cars, including the XC90, will all be offered with the potential for high-level automatic road driving that will be optional for customers. The hardware would be there to allow hands-off and hands-off driving if regulations allowed this in time, but Samuelsson called back from Volvo offering a fully autonomous car – as most industries do today.

Production of the XC90 will be moved from Torslanda, Sweden to Volvo’s new factory in South Carolina, USA.
